New Roofs in Atlanta for Additions, Garages and Porches
New roof sections are where leaks start years later, usually at the joint with the old roof. We plan that joint before the first shingle goes on.

A new roof installation in Atlanta is priced by area and pitch, with asphalt shingles running $3.50 to $5.50 per square foot installed by published Georgia figures. What decides whether it stays dry is the tie-in to the existing house, so we detail valleys, wall flashing and crickets before a single shingle goes on.

The job
What a New Roof Section Needs Before Shingles
New roofing starts when the framer leaves: sheathing checked for nailing and gaps, drip edge on the eaves, underlayment over the whole deck, and the roof dried in before the next rain. On an addition it also means opening the edge of the existing roof so the new work laps under it properly.
We match the shingle to the house, whether that is GAF, Owens Corning or CertainTeed, so the addition does not read as an addition from the street. Where the new roof meets siding, every course gets step and counter flashing.

Your options
Shingles, Metal or Membrane for the New Section
Most new sections take one of three materials, decided mostly by pitch and what the roof has to match.
| Architectural shingles | Metal | Low-slope membrane | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best on | Additions on shingled houses | Garages, workshops, porches | Porches and carports under 2:12 |
| Matches the house | Closely, same line | Color yes, profile differs | Usually out of sight |
| Installed cost | $3.50 to $5.50 per sq ft | $7 to $14 per sq ft | Varies by membrane |
| Tie-in detail | Woven or closed valley | Transition flashing | Laps under the main roof |
What the work covers
Home Addition Roofing
An addition changes how water moves across the back of the house. Where the new roof meets the old one, a valley forms, and where it dies into a wall, the wall needs step flashing behind the siding. We cut back the existing shingles along the tie-in, weave or close-cut the new valley under them, and run ice-and-water membrane the full length of the joint. When the addition's pitch is lower than the main roof, we check whether shingles are still allowed at that slope or whether a membrane is the right call.

Detached Garage and Shed Roofs
A detached garage or large shed gets the same system as the house: drip edge, full underlayment, starter strip, and shingles nailed in the manufacturer's pattern. Cutting corners here shows up as rotten fascia and a sagging deck within a few years. Garages are often simple gables at modest pitch, which makes them quick to roof and easy to match. If you want the outbuilding to outlast the house roof, a metal roof is a common choice on garages and workshops.

Porch and Carport Roofs
Porches and carports are usually low-slope, and slope decides the material. Below the pitch shingles are made for, water backs up under the tabs, so a porch roof often takes a modified bitumen or TPO membrane that ties under the main roof's shingles. Steeper porch roofs can carry shingles to match the house. Either way, the joint against the house wall is where porches leak, so it gets membrane underlayment, step or counter flashing, and a kick-out at the bottom edge. Our flat roof page covers the membranes.

New Roofs on Atlanta's Historic Streets
In Inman Park, Grant Park and Adair Park, the city's historic district rules can require a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Urban Design Commission for exterior changes to contributing houses, and additions are the typical case. That review covers the massing and materials the street can see, so on those blocks we match roof pitch and shingle color to the original house and plan the tie-in around what was approved, before any roofing is ordered.

Questions we hear
New Roof Installation Questions
Usually. We identify the line and color on the house and order the same product where it is still made.
If the old roof is near the end of its life, often yes: one roof, one age, no mismatched shingles.
Yes. We schedule around framing and dry the roof in as soon as the sheathing is ready.
Most shingles need at least 2:12, with doubled underlayment below 4:12. Flatter than that, a membrane is the right material.
Yes. Metal is common on garages and workshops, and the color can match the house.
At the joint with the house: valleys, wall flashing and the bottom of a wall.
In Atlanta's designated districts, visible exterior changes can need Urban Design Commission review before materials are ordered.
