Shingle Repair in Atlanta After Wind, Hail and Age

A few missing shingles do not mean a new roof. They do mean the tabs around them need checking.

Shingle repair in Atlanta typically costs $320 to $1,009 by published local figures, and most jobs replace a handful of missing, cracked or lifted tabs. We match the shingle line and color, hand-seal the course around the repair and check the nail line, since a broken seal is what lets wind peel shingles off.

Signs to watch for

Signs Your Shingles Need Attention

Shingles in the yard

Pieces on the lawn or in gutters after a storm mean exposed nails above.

Lifted or creased tabs

Tabs that flap or show a crease have lost their seal.

Granules in the gutters

Heavy grit at the downspouts signals shingles wearing through.

Curling or cupped edges

Heat and age are pulling shingles out of their seal.

Dark or bare patches

Missing granules leave asphalt exposed to the sun.

The job

What Actually Happens When a Shingle Blows Off

Most shingle damage here is wind, not age. A gust lifts a tab whose adhesive strip has weakened, the tab creases or tears off, and the exposed nails take the next rain. From the yard it looks like one missing piece while the course above it is unsealed.

We lift the course above, remove damaged pieces and nails, slide in new shingles and nail them in the manufacturer's pattern. Every tab we disturb is hand-sealed. On GAF, Owens Corning or CertainTeed architectural roofs, we match the product line where it is still made.

What the work covers

Missing Shingle Replacement

When shingles are gone, the underlayment beneath becomes the only barrier, and underlayment is not meant to sit in sun and rain. We replace missing pieces course by course, weaving new shingles under the intact ones above so the offset pattern holds. Exposed nail heads from the lost tabs are pulled or sealed, since a nail left proud wears through the shingle laid over it. If the underlayment tore, it gets patched before any shingle goes on, because a tear hidden under a new shingle is a slow leak waiting.

Curling and Cracked Shingle Repair

Curled edges, cracked tabs and bald spots where granules washed away are heat and age, and they rarely stop at one shingle. If the damage is scattered across a slope, replacing single pieces only buys time, and we will say so. If it is limited to a spot under a vent stack, an old satellite mount or a patch that bakes in afternoon sun, targeted replacement is a fair repair. Granule loss in the gutters is part of how we judge the life a slope has left.

Ridge Cap Repair

Ridge caps take the most wind and the most sun on the roof, and they are often the first pieces to crack. A cracked cap lets water into the ridge vent or onto the top course nails. We replace caps with matching hip-and-ridge shingles rather than cut three-tab pieces, nail them through the correct zone and check the vent beneath for loose or crushed sections. Where the vent itself is failing, that becomes part of a roof vent repair in the same visit.

Why Atlanta Shingles Lift Before They Wear Out

Georgia has some of the newest owner-occupied housing in the country, so many Atlanta roofs are on their first set of shingles and still worth repairing. What sends them to repair is usually wind. Gusts near 60 mph in recent storms across Fulton County and Cobb County were enough to break the seal on already-loose tabs, and a lifted tab lets water track under the course even when nothing is missing.

What drives the price

What a Shingle Repair Costs in Atlanta

Published Atlanta figures put most roof repairs at $320 to $1,009, averaging $657; replacing a few shingles typically runs $300 to $800. Planning ranges, not our quote.

Number of shingles

A few tabs versus several feet across a slope.

Shingle line

Discontinued products need the closest match or a bigger section.

Pitch and height

Steep and two-story roofs take more setup.

Underlayment damage

Torn underlayment is patched before shingling.

Ridge and hip work

Caps and ridge vent sections add pieces and labor.

Obstacles

Solar panels, satellite mounts and trees slow the repair.
