Solar Panel Removal and Reinstall for Atlanta Roof Work

A roof under solar panels still wears out. The trick is getting the panels off and back on without trading a roof leak for a mount leak.

Solar panel removal and reinstall in Atlanta is needed whenever the roof under an array is repaired or replaced: the panels and racking come off, the roof is redone, every mount is flashed into the new shingles, and the array goes back on. Because each rail attachment is a hole in the roof, the reflashing is what decides whether the job stays dry.

The job

Why Reroofing Under Solar Needs a Plan

Solar arrays are often installed on roofs with ten or fifteen years already on them, which means the shingles give out while the panels still have decades left. At that point the array has to come off before the roof can be replaced.

The electrical side, disconnecting and recommissioning the system, belongs to a solar electrician. Our side is the roof: everything between the rails and the deck. We schedule both so the array spends as little time off the roof as possible.

What the work covers

Panel Detach Before Reroofing

Once the system is safely shut down and disconnected, panels come off rail by rail and are stored flat and padded on site or in a secure spot, labeled by position. Rails and mounts are removed and the attachment points photographed before the old roof comes off, so the array goes back exactly where it was. Any damage to panels or racking found during removal is documented before we touch the roof, so nobody argues later about what was already there.

Reinstall and Mount Flashing

Every solar attachment is a lag bolt into a rafter, and every one needs a flashed mount. On the new roof we locate each rafter, install mounts with purpose-made flashing woven into the shingle courses, and seal the bolt under the flashing rather than on top of it. Rails and panels then go back on to the original layout. Mounts that were simply caulked to the old shingles are exactly how solar roofs leak, and that is the shortcut we do not take.

Leak repair at a solar rack mount

Rack Mount Leak Repair

Leaks under an array usually trace to one or two mounts where the flashing was skipped or the sealant dried. Finding them means working under the panels with a light and sometimes lifting a panel or two. We reflash the failed mounts with proper flashing blocks, replace cracked shingles around them, and check the rest of the attachments while the panels are open. If the roof under the array is near the end of its life, we will tell you before investing in spot repairs.

What drives the price

What Panel Removal and Reinstall Costs Depend On

Detach and reset pricing follows the size of the array and the roof work underneath it.

Number of panels

More panels mean more handling and mounts.

Racking type

Some rail systems come apart faster than others.

Roof work

Repair under part of the array or a full replacement.

Mount flashing

New flashed mounts at every attachment.

Storage

Panels stored on site or moved and secured.

Electrical

Disconnect and recommissioning by a solar electrician.

First Replacements Under Atlanta Solar Arrays

Georgia's owner-occupied housing is among the newest in the country, so many Atlanta arrays sit on roofs that are still on their first set of shingles and will need their first full replacement while the panels keep producing. The good news is timing: a standard shingle replacement here usually takes one to three working days, so with the electrician lined up, an array is typically off the roof for a short window rather than a season.

Timeline

How Long the Array Is Off the Roof

On a typical home the array is off the roof for the length of the roof work plus a day on each side for removal and reset. A standard shingle replacement usually takes one to three working days.

The bigger variable is scheduling the electrician for shutdown and recommissioning. We book both ends before the first panel comes off, so the system is not left waiting.
